Located in the outskirts of Vienna, Ulmenstrasse 161 is façade and interior redesign project of a two-family house. The hilly surroundings look over forest slopes and the neighborhood are quiet and picturesque. While having a building permit for the architectural volume itself, the commissioner decides to find the right façade design that would fit with proper aesthetics to the future owners’ expectation. To a large extent, the volume is defined by local authorities and cannot be drastically changed. Mastering the complex volumes is a challenge, as well as a handling the new façade in order to work with interior spaces in a harmonious way. The concept follows the context – the house is on the borderline between urbanity and nature. The two cladding materials are arranged in accordance to the two types of facades: on the front and the back appears the thermo wood, while fiber cement panels are used for the flat side elevations of the house.
