The existing Hotel Balkan in the town of Gabrovo is one of the distinctive symbols of the town and is situated in the central part of the town. It is a traditional, old-fashioned three-star hotel. After reconstruction, the hotel will be categorized as a business hotel with the emphasis on conference halls with a capacity of over 400 seats. The hotel has 11 floors. The foyer, a restaurant, a café and a spa centre occupy the first three floors. The only element that will be preserved from the existing facade is the brilliant fresco, which has an exquisite geometrical shape. The painting will be restored, since it is central to the new project. A suspended structure with a double-skin glass facade will replace the existing one. The amorphously shaped ventilating membranes of the window panes lend dynamism to the shape of the building and underlines the affiliation of the hotel to modern architecture.
